Flags of the World: Identify the Countries Worksheet
Using hint letters to write out each country's name from its flag helps children ages 4-6 practice spelling unfamiliar words while building a mental map of world geography and cultural diversity. Because the clues scaffold the answer rather than giving it away entirely, children also strengthen problem-solving skills as they figure out which letters must go where. This worksheet is a gentle bridge between simple flag recognition and independent word writing.
Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Point to the first flag and ask your child what colors and shapes they notice before revealing the country name. Read the clue letters together and have your child work out which letters are missing, writing them into the blanks to spell the full country name. Move flag by flag across the page, letting your child compare flags that share similar colors so they start noticing differences between countries. When the page is finished, read all the completed country names aloud together as a final review.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Eraser
Extension activities
- •Research the capital city of each country on the worksheet and add it as a label next to the flag.
- •Have your child color each flag using the correct colors from memory before checking the real flag.
- •Design a brand-new flag for an imaginary country and explain what the colors and shapes represent.
- •Find each featured country on a globe or world map and measure how far it is from home.
- •Try a simple food or song from one of the featured countries to connect the flag to its culture.
Tips for parents and teachers
Watch whether your child is copying letters mechanically or actually sounding out the country names; pause and ask them to say the word aloud if they seem to be guessing randomly. Some country names are long and can feel discouraging, so it's fine to write a few letters for them and let them fill in just one or two blanks independently at first. Frame each flag as a mini geography lesson by asking what they already know about that country before moving on.
