Addition Worksheets (Ages 4–7)
Addition worksheets are printable sheets for children aged 4 to 7 that teach joining two groups and finding the total. They progress through picture addition, counting on with a number line, number bonds to 10, adding within 10 and 20, and column addition without regrouping, covering Pre-K to 1st Grade, Reception to Year 2, and LKG to Class 1.
Addition is where a child's counting either turns into number sense or stays as counting. A four-year-old adds three apples and two apples by counting all five from the start. A five-year-old holds the three in mind and counts on two more, then learns the pairs that make 10 until 7 + 3 needs no counting. A seven-year-old in 1st Grade, Year 2 or Class 1 uses those pairs to add 8 + 5 by making 10 first, and adds 34 + 23 in columns. Each is a different strategy, and a sheet built for one will not teach another. The addition worksheets here are labeled by strategy as well as range, so a parent in Pre-K, Reception or LKG can pick picture sums, and one in Kindergarten, Year 1 or UKG can pick number bonds or ten frames.

The addition progression
Picture addition comes first: two groups of objects, count them all, write the total. Next is counting on, where the child starts from the larger number and counts up, usually on a number line, which is the first move away from counting from one. Number bonds follow, the pairs that make each number to 10, learned until they are recalled rather than worked out. With bonds secure, facts within 10 are fast and facts within 20 use the make-10 strategy (8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3).
Column addition without regrouping (23 + 45) arrives last, around age 7, and depends on place value: the child adds ones to ones and tens to tens because they understand what each column means. Sheets that introduce columns before place value produce a procedure without understanding, which breaks when regrouping is introduced in 2nd Grade, Year 3 or Class 2.

How to use addition worksheets at home
For picture sums, have the child circle each group, count aloud, and say the sentence ("three and two make five") before writing. For number-line sheets, put a finger on the first number and hop. For number bonds, use ten objects and split them into two piles every way before the sheet, which then records what the hands already know. Five to ten problems a day is enough; a page of thirty sums teaches fatigue, and the grid-drill sheets here are for timed recall only after the facts are known.
Signs of difficulty and what helps
A child who counts from one for every sum, including 1 + 1, has not yet grasped that a number can be held as a whole; go back to subitizing and counting-on sheets. A child who knows 4 + 3 but not 3 + 4 has not seen that order does not matter; turnaround sheets fix this quickly. A child who gets facts within 10 right but within 20 wrong is usually missing the make-10 step and needs ten-frame sheets rather than more practice with bare numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What addition should a child know by the end of kindergarten?
By the end of Kindergarten, Year 1 or UKG, around age 6, a child is expected to add within 10 using objects, fingers, drawings or a number line, to know the number bonds for every number up to 10 (for example 3 + 7 and 6 + 4), to solve simple word problems with addition, and to add within 5 from memory. Common Core lists these as K.OA.A.1 to K.OA.A.5. Fluency within 20 is a 1st Grade goal.
What age should a child start addition worksheets?
Picture addition can begin at 4 to 5 once a child counts ten objects accurately and answers "how many?" without recounting. Number-only sums suit 5 to 6 after counting on is in place. Introducing written sums before counting is secure teaches children to solve every problem by counting from one on fingers, a habit that is slow to replace, so the counting hub is the right place to start if that is not yet solid.
What are number bonds and why do they matter?
Number bonds are the pairs of numbers that combine to make a target, such as 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7 for 10. Knowing them by heart means a child can add and subtract within 10 without counting, and can use 10 as a stepping stone for larger sums (8 + 5 as 8 + 2 + 3). They are taught in Reception and Year 1 in the UK, in Kindergarten in the US and in UKG and Class 1 in India.
How do I teach my child to add without using fingers?
Fingers are a normal stage and should not be banned, but the way past them is subitizing and number bonds. Use ten-frame sheets so the child sees 7 as a full row of five and two more, then sees 7 + 3 as filling the frame. Learn the bonds to 10 as pairs until they are instant. Counting on from the larger number replaces counting from one, and doubles (6 + 6) give anchors for near doubles (6 + 7). Fingers drop away as recall takes over.
What is the difference between addition within 10 and within 20?
Within 10 means both addends and the total are at most 10, and these facts are learned as number bonds and recalled directly. Within 20 means the total can reach 20 (8 + 7, 9 + 6), which cannot be recalled directly at first and is solved by making 10 (8 + 2 + 5) or by doubles. Within 10 is a Kindergarten, Reception and UKG goal; within 20 is 1st Grade, Year 1 to 2 and Class 1.
