Kindergarten Addition Worksheets (Ages 5–6)

Kindergarten addition worksheets are practice sheets for children aged 5–6 in Kindergarten in the US. Addition is combining two or more groups of objects or numbers to find a total, using objects, pictures or written number sentences. The sheets on this page cover combining two groups into one, number bonds and doubles, counting on from a number and making ten.

Kindergarten is the year formal reading instruction begins under Common Core: a child is expected to know a sound for every consonant and the short vowels, decode simple three-letter words, write a basic sentence, count to 100 by ones and tens, and add and subtract within 10. Five-year-olds join groups within ten and, for the first time, write the matching number sentence with a plus sign and an equals sign. Worksheets should move from pictures to numbers only across the page, fill number bonds to ten using a ten frame, and start to introduce counting on from the larger number instead of counting both groups from one. Recall of facts without any counting is not the goal yet; a chosen counting strategy is enough.

Subtraction Worksheet: Count and Subtract with Fun Objects!

SubtractionCounting

This worksheet grounds subtraction in something 4-6 year olds can actually see and count — a group of objects being taken away — rather than starting with abstract numerals and symbols. Because your child has to count the starting group, physically account for the number being subtracted, and then count what's left, this builds real number sense about what subtraction means, not just a memorized fact.

Descending Order Worksheet for Kids: Numbers 63-100

Descending OrderNumber Sequence

Arranging numbers from largest to smallest asks children ages 4-6 to apply their counting knowledge in reverse, which is a genuinely different mental skill from counting forward and helps solidify a flexible, deep understanding of number order rather than rote recitation. Working within the 63 to 100 range also pushes children to compare two-digit numbers directly, deciding which of two numbers is bigger based on both digits rather than just the first one. This kind of descending practice complements ascending counting practice and rounds out a child's overall number sense.

Dragon Egg Numbers: Counting to 50 Worksheet

CountingMissing Numbers

Filling in the missing numbers across a run of dragon eggs stretches a 4-6 year old's counting range well past the more common 1-20 practice, into territory where number patterns — like how every decade starts a new '_1, _2, _3' pattern — start to become visible. It's a strong bridge activity between rote counting and genuinely understanding how the number system is built.

Tens and Ones Worksheet: Matching and Counting Fun!

Tens & OnesPlace Value

Understanding that a two-digit number is made up of groups of ten plus some extra ones is one of the most important early place value concepts for children ages 4-6, forming the foundation for all later multi-digit addition and subtraction. This worksheet combines an equation-matching task with an object-counting task, giving children practice with basic addition facts alongside the specific skill of grouping objects into tens and counting remaining ones. Seeing the same numerical ideas presented in two different formats on one page helps reinforce that place value isn't just an abstract rule but a way of organizing real quantities.

Word Problems Worksheet for Early Learners

Word ProblemAddition

Word problems ask 4-6 year olds to do something harder than a bare equation: read a short story, figure out what operation it's describing, and only then do the addition or subtraction. That translation step — turning 'Sam had 3 apples and ate 1' into a subtraction fact — is the real skill this worksheet builds, and it's the foundation for all later math word problems your child will encounter in school. Because the numbers here stay small, the challenge is almost entirely about comprehension rather than calculation.

Crossword Math Worksheet: Fill in the Missing Numbers!

SubtractionCrossword

This crossword-style worksheet has 4-6 year olds solve a series of subtraction equations to fill in missing numbers, then cross-check their answers by matching them across and down within the grid — a built-in accuracy check that regular subtraction worksheets don't offer. Because an answer has to be correct in both directions to complete the crossword properly, this format naturally encourages your child to double-check their subtraction rather than move on after a single attempt.

Subtraction Worksheet: Find the Row with Matching Answers!

SubtractionNumbers

This worksheet pushes subtraction practice a step further for children ages 4-6 by having them solve several subtraction problems and then compare the answers across different rows to find matches, adding a layer of number-sense reasoning on top of basic calculation. Recognizing that two different subtraction problems can produce the same answer helps children understand that numbers can be reached in more than one way, which is an important early step toward flexible mathematical thinking. This kind of comparison task also builds attention to detail, since a child has to solve every problem accurately before the matching rows can be found.

Subtraction Fun: Count and Subtract with Hands and Objects!

SubtractionCounting

This worksheet introduces basic subtraction by having children count a starting group of objects and then 'take away' a smaller amount indicated by the minus sign, connecting the abstract concept of subtraction to something they can see and count. For four- to six-year-olds, visualizing subtraction as physically removing objects from a group — rather than just manipulating numbers — makes the concept concrete before they move to solving subtraction problems with numbers alone.

  • Count on from the larger number instead of starting at one

How to use these worksheets at home or in class

One phonics sheet and one math sheet most days, about fifteen minutes altogether, matches the pace many kindergarten classrooms set. Read any word list or passage aloud together first, then let your child attempt it independently before checking the answers.

Start with the sheet that matches what your child can already do, then move one step up. Keep finished sheets in a folder: Kindergarten teachers often ask for evidence of practice, and children like seeing their own progress.

Is your child ready for Kindergarten addition work?

A child entering kindergarten typically writes their first name, recognizes most letters, counts a small group of objects accurately, knows basic shapes and colors, and follows a two-step spoken direction without needing it repeated.

Frequently asked questions

What is counting on and why does it matter for a five-year-old?

Counting on means starting from the bigger of the two numbers and counting up the smaller amount, so 6 + 3 is solved as "6, 7, 8, 9" rather than counting all nine from one. It is faster and less error-prone than counting everything from the start, and it is usually the first real addition strategy a child develops beyond just counting a joined pile. Encourage it by starting with the larger number said aloud before any counting begins.

What should a Kindergarten child be able to do in addition?

Five-year-olds join groups within ten and, for the first time, write the matching number sentence with a plus sign and an equals sign. Worksheets should move from pictures to numbers only across the page, fill number bonds to ten using a ten frame, and start to introduce counting on from the larger number instead of counting both groups from one. Recall of facts without any counting is not the goal yet; a chosen counting strategy is enough. A child entering kindergarten typically writes their first name, recognizes most letters, counts a small group of objects accurately, knows basic shapes and colors, and follows a two-step spoken direction without needing it repeated.

Do these worksheets follow the Kindergarten curriculum?

The sheets cover combining two groups into one, number bonds and doubles, counting on from a number and making ten, which sit inside the Common Core Kindergarten (RF.K, K.CC, K.OA, K.G) outcomes for Kindergarten. Reception / Year 1 (UK), UKG / Senior KG (India) use the same skills at this age, so the sheets also fit families following those programmes.

Are these Kindergarten addition worksheets free?

Yes. Each worksheet downloads free as a watermarked PDF once you create an account, with a limit of five a day. An annual membership ($20) removes the watermark and the limit for the whole library of over 1,000 worksheets and every printable pack.
