Kindergarten Tracing Worksheets (Ages 5–6)
Kindergarten tracing worksheets are practice sheets for children aged 5–6 in Kindergarten in the US. Tracing means guiding a pencil or crayon along a printed dotted or outlined path to practice control and the movements handwriting depends on. The sheets on this page cover standing and sleeping lines, curves and zigzags, pencil grip and control and stroke starting points and direction.
Kindergarten is the year formal reading instruction begins under Common Core: a child is expected to know a sound for every consonant and the short vowels, decode simple three-letter words, write a basic sentence, count to 100 by ones and tens, and add and subtract within 10. By five to six, tracing finishes the lowercase alphabet, moves numerals up to twenty, and adds short three- or four-letter words traced on a line rather than in a box. Sheets should mix a traced word with a blank line beside it for a copy, so the dotted guide is fading rather than constant. By the end of the year a well-known letter or short word should be written from a model with no dots at all.
