Handwriting Worksheets (Ages 3–7)

Two-year-olds scribble, and that is the right activity for them. Pre-writing stroke sheets suit children from 3, once they hold a crayon with fingers rather than a fist. Letter tracing typically starts at 4, in Preschool, Nursery or LKG, and independent letter and name writing at 4 to 5. Sentence writing on lines belongs to 5 to 6. Starting formal letter writing before a child can copy a circle, cross and square usually leads to poor grip and frustration.

By age 5, at the end of Pre-K, Reception or LKG, a child is generally expected to write their first name with a capital and lowercase letters, form most capital letters and many lowercase letters recognizably, and copy a short word. By 6, at the end of Kindergarten, Year 1 or UKG, the expectation rises to all letters correctly formed, words spaced with finger gaps, and a short sentence with a capital letter and full stop.

Print first, in nearly all systems, because print letters match the letters children see in books and on screens, and print strokes are simpler. Cursive is added once print is secure: in UKG or Class 1 in many Indian schools, in Year 1 to 2 in the UK where the National Curriculum requires joins, and from 3rd Grade in US schools that teach it. Follow the sequence your child's school uses so the two do not conflict.

Four-line paper has two solid outer lines and two inner lines (often one dotted). Small letters such as a, c and m sit between the two middle lines; tall letters like b, d and l reach the top line; letters with tails such as g, p and y drop to the bottom line. It is standard in Indian cursive notebooks and in many UK handwriting schemes. Two-line or three-line paper, common in the US, shows only the baseline and midline.

Use short pencils (about 5 cm), which force the fingers to the tip, or triangular pencils, and strengthen the hand with playdough, tweezers, pegs and tearing paper. Show the "pinch and flip" trick: pinch the pencil near the tip, flip it back so it rests in the web of the hand. Writing on a vertical surface such as an easel naturally positions the wrist. Grips settle by about 6; after that, changing them is harder.
