Reception Handwriting Worksheets (Ages 4–5)

By the end of the year most four-year-olds can write their first name, copy most capital letters recognizably, and trace all of them. Lowercase letters are usually started but not finished, and a handful of reversals, especially with b, d, s and the numeral 3, are expected. Letters will vary in size and drift off any line. What matters at four is the starting point and stroke direction, not neatness.

Four is the year of capital letters. With a tripod grip forming, a child traces each capital with a marked starting dot and arrows, then copies it beside the model, and writes the first name with a capital and lowercase letters. Lowercase letters follow in the second half of the year. Worksheets should show direction on every letter and keep letters large. Writing on a baseline, spacing words and forming letters from dictation are next year's work. A child moving into this stage typically holds a pencil with a developing grip, recognises several letters by sound rather than only by shape, and can count a small group of objects one at a time without skipping any.
