KS1 Worksheets (Ages 5–7)
KS1 (Key Stage 1) worksheets are practice sheets for children aged 5 to 7 in Years 1 and 2 of primary school in England. They follow the National Curriculum programmes of study for English and mathematics: phonics and spelling, reading comprehension, sentence and story writing, addition and subtraction to 100, and the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Key Stage 1 is the two-year stretch in which children become independent readers and writers and move from counting to calculating. Year 1 is dominated by phonics and the screening check; Year 2 shifts to spelling rules, reading for meaning, longer writing, and mental addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers. Since the 2023/24 school year the end-of-KS1 SATs have been optional rather than statutory, so most schools now assess Year 2 through teacher judgement and their own short tests. That changes what practice at home is for: not test rehearsal, but steady fluency in the skills the National Curriculum expects. The worksheets on this page are grouped so that a Year 1 child can work on decoding and number bonds while a Year 2 child practises comprehension, spelling patterns and times tables from the same collection.

What KS1 covers in English and maths
The KS1 English programme of study has four strands: word reading, comprehension, transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition. By the end of Year 2 children should read most words fluently without overt sounding out, spell the Year 2 common exception words, and write short narratives and simple reports. The mathematics programme covers number and place value to 100, the four operations, fractions (halves, quarters, thirds), measurement, geometry and simple statistics.
- Phonics and spelling: Phase 5 and 6, suffixes -ing, -ed, -er and -est, contractions, common homophones
- Reading: fluency, retrieval and inference questions, sequencing the events of a story
- Writing: statements, questions, exclamations and commands; expanded noun phrases; past and present tense
- Number: place value to 100, addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers, 2, 5 and 10 times tables, halves and quarters
- Measurement, geometry and statistics: money, time to five minutes, properties of 2D and 3D shapes, tally charts and pictograms
End of KS1 assessments
Until 2023 all Year 2 children in England sat statutory KS1 SATs in reading and maths in May, with results used internally by schools. From the 2023/24 school year these tests became optional, and the Reception Baseline Assessment replaced them as the starting point for measuring progress to the end of Key Stage 2. Schools may still use the optional papers, but there is no requirement to, and results are not published. Teacher assessment against the curriculum remains the formal judgement at the end of Year 2.
How to use KS1 worksheets
Choose by skill, not by year label. A child in Year 2 who is still shaky on Phase 5 sounds should keep working on decodable passages; a Year 1 child with secure number bonds can start two-digit addition. Fifteen to twenty minutes is a sensible session. Alternate an English sheet and a maths sheet across the week, and read the finished sheet back together, because explaining an answer is where much of the learning happens.
Frequently asked questions
What does KS1 mean?
KS1 stands for Key Stage 1, the first stage of the National Curriculum in England. It covers Year 1 and Year 2, ages 5 to 7, and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. Key Stage 2 covers Years 3 to 6. The KS1 programmes of study set out what children are taught in English, mathematics, science and the foundation subjects.
Are KS1 SATs still compulsory?
No. The end-of-KS1 tests in reading and mathematics were statutory until May 2023. From the 2023/24 academic year they became optional, so schools can choose whether to use the papers, and results are not collected nationally or published. Progress to Key Stage 2 is now measured from the Reception Baseline Assessment. Teacher assessment at the end of Year 2 continues.
What should a child know by the end of KS1?
By the end of Year 2 a child is expected to read fluently at roughly 90 words a minute, spell most common words and the Year 2 exception words, write in consistent handwriting with capital letters, full stops, question marks and commas in lists, add and subtract two-digit numbers mentally and on paper, recall the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, find halves and quarters, and tell the time to five minutes.
Which times tables are taught in KS1?
The National Curriculum requires the 2, 5 and 10 times tables by the end of Year 2, including the related division facts and recognising odd and even numbers. Year 1 lays the groundwork by counting in twos, fives and tens from zero. The 3, 4 and 8 times tables follow in Year 3, and all tables up to 12 × 12 are expected by the end of Year 4, when the multiplication tables check is taken.
How do KS1 worksheets differ from EYFS worksheets?
EYFS sheets are single-skill, picture-led and expect adult support: trace this letter, count these ducks. KS1 sheets expect independent reading of the instruction, written answers in words or number sentences, and sustained work for 15 to 20 minutes. They introduce comprehension questions, spelling rules, two-digit calculations and multiplication, none of which appear in Reception.
