KS1 Tracing Worksheets (Ages 5–7)

One letter at a time, not all at once. A child who traces a letter correctly several sessions in a row is usually ready to copy it beside a model, and after a few correct copies, to write it when it is only named aloud. Most five- to six-year-olds are through this sequence for well-practiced letters like the ones in their name, while less common letters may still need the dots for a while longer.

By five to six, tracing finishes the lowercase alphabet, moves numerals up to twenty, and adds short three- or four-letter words traced on a line rather than in a box. Sheets should mix a traced word with a blank line beside it for a copy, so the dotted guide is fading rather than constant. By the end of the year a well-known letter or short word should be written from a model with no dots at all. A child ready for the later half of this stage reads a short passage with reasonable fluency, writes several connected sentences, adds and subtracts within twenty and recalls the 2, 5 and 10 times tables with growing confidence.
