KS1 Pattern Writing Worksheets (Ages 5–7)
KS1 pattern writing worksheets are practice sheets for children aged 5–7 in Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2) in the UK. Pattern writing is repeating a printed sequence of loops, waves or zigzags with a pencil to build the rhythm and control cursive letters require. The sheets on this page cover repeating loops and waves, curves that lead into cursive strokes and consistent rhythm and spacing.
Key Stage 1 covers Years 1 and 2 together, the stretch in which a child becomes an independent reader and writer while moving from counting to calculating. Year 1 work centres on phonics and the screening check; Year 2 shifts towards spelling patterns, longer writing and mental arithmetic with two-digit numbers. By five to six, pattern writing has done most of its work, and what remains is scale and stamina. A child produces waves, loops and zigzags between narrow lines, joins them into a continuous run across the page, and keeps the size even throughout. Where cursive is taught, these become the entry strokes and joins of the script. Worksheets should be full-line rows on two-line or four-line paper. Patterns already formed neatly can be dropped.

Because this stage spans two years, match the sheet to what the classroom is doing rather than to age alone: decoding and number bonds for a Year 1 child, comprehension and times tables for a Year 2 child, in sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes.
Start with the sheet that matches what your child can already do, then move one step up. Keep finished sheets in a folder: KS1 teachers often ask for evidence of practice, and children like seeing their own progress.

A child ready for the later half of this stage reads a short passage with reasonable fluency, writes several connected sentences, adds and subtracts within twenty and recalls the 2, 5 and 10 times tables with growing confidence.
Frequently asked questions
Does a five-year-old still need pattern writing?
Less than before, and only for specific strokes. A five-year-old who forms letters correctly does not need more standing and sleeping lines. What still helps is small-scale, continuous work: loops and waves across a full line between narrow guides, which build the even sizing and rhythm that sentences need, and, in schools that teach cursive, the exact strokes the joins are made of. Ten minutes a few times a week is enough at this age.
