Observe and Draw: Pattern Recognition Worksheet for Preschoolers
This worksheet challenges children ages 3-5 to identify decreasing patterns — sequences where shapes shrink or reduce in a predictable way — and draw the next shape in that sequence themselves. Decreasing patterns are more demanding than simple repeating patterns because children must track a changing rule, like shapes getting smaller, rather than a fixed repeating unit. Drawing the answer, rather than choosing from options, also requires stronger visual-motor planning to reproduce the shape accurately at the right size.

How to use this worksheet
Look at the shapes in the first box together and describe how they are changing from one to the next, such as getting smaller each time. Ask your child what the next shape in the sequence should look like based on that changing pattern. Have your child draw the predicted shape in the empty space provided, doing their best to match the expected size and form. Continue through each remaining pattern box the same way, discussing the changing rule before drawing.

Provide positive reinforcement for effort and correct answers, since attempting to draw a shrinking or shifting shape by hand is a real fine motor challenge.
