Counting on means starting from the bigger of the two numbers and counting up the smaller amount, so 6 + 3 is solved as "6, 7, 8, 9" rather than counting all nine from one. It is faster and less error-prone than counting everything from the start, and it is usually the first real addition strategy a child develops beyond just counting a joined pile. Encourage it by starting with the larger number said aloud before any counting begins.

Five-year-olds join groups within ten and, for the first time, write the matching number sentence with a plus sign and an equals sign. Worksheets should move from pictures to numbers only across the page, fill number bonds to ten using a ten frame, and start to introduce counting on from the larger number instead of counting both groups from one. Recall of facts without any counting is not the goal yet; a chosen counting strategy is enough. A child ready for the later half of this stage reads a short passage with reasonable fluency, writes several connected sentences, adds and subtracts within twenty and recalls the 2, 5 and 10 times tables with growing confidence.
