What KS1 sight words worksheets cover

This is the year sight words are learned in bulk. Children at five to six work through the first forty to fifty high-frequency words, the pre-primer list or the tricky words of the early phonics phases, at a pace of three to five a week. Worksheets should follow read, trace, write, find on one page and mix the new word with older ones. Expect slow, deliberate reading; expect spelling of "was" and "said" to still wobble.

Start with the sheet that matches what your child can already do, then move one step up. Keep finished sheets in a folder: KS1 teachers often ask for evidence of practice, and children like seeing their own progress.

A child ready for the later half of this stage reads a short passage with reasonable fluency, writes several connected sentences, adds and subtracts within twenty and recalls the 2, 5 and 10 times tables with growing confidence.

• Read the first hundred high-frequency words with no hesitation
• Fill a cloze sentence with the sight word that fits the meaning
• Write two sentences each using "because" or "where"
