Only if the school has started it, and schools differ widely: some introduce cursive at six on four-line paper, some begin joining letters over the next two years, and some keep print throughout. In every case print letter formation should be secure first, because cursive joins letters the child can already form. If the school uses print, spend the year on size, spacing and speed instead, which are the skills that transfer to any style later.

At six, handwriting becomes a tool for writing rather than the lesson itself. A child writes several sentences with consistent size, sits every letter on the line, and uses capitals and periods without prompting. Depending on the school, this is also when cursive strokes or the first letter joins are introduced on four-line paper. Worksheets should provide copywork of two or three sentences, dictation, and a row of each join being learned. Speed is not yet the aim. A child ready for this stage decodes CVC words automatically, writes a simple sentence with a capital letter and end punctuation, adds and subtracts fluently within 10, and counts and writes numerals confidently to 20.
