Kindergarten Math Worksheets

By the end of kindergarten a child should count to 100 by ones and tens, count on from any number below 100, write numerals 0 to 20, count up to 20 objects accurately, compare two groups and two numerals, add and subtract within 10 and do so fluently within 5, understand teen numbers as ten and some ones, compare lengths and weights, sort objects, and name and describe common 2D and 3D shapes.

K.CC is the Counting and Cardinality domain of the kindergarten math standards. It has seven standards in three clusters: know number names and the count sequence (count to 100, write to 20), count to tell the number of objects (one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, counting out a given number), and compare numbers (more, fewer, equal, and comparing written numerals to 10). It is the foundation for everything in first grade math.

Common Core asks for fluency within 5 only (K.OA.5), meaning quick and accurate recall of facts like 2 + 3 and 4 − 1. Facts within 10 are solved with objects, drawings, fingers and ten-frames, and fluency within 10 is a first grade goal. Timed drills of facts to 10 are not expected in kindergarten; understanding that 7 can be made from 5 and 2, 6 and 1, or 3 and 4 is.

K.NBT.1 asks children to see 11 through 19 as a group of ten and some ones, using objects and drawings and an equation such as 14 = 10 + 4. Ten-frames make this concrete: one full frame plus some counters in a second. The teen number names in English are irregular (eleven, twelve, thirteen), so plenty of oral counting and writing the numerals alongside the ten-frame pictures both matter.

Kindergarten math stays within 10 for operations, counts to 100, and introduces teen numbers as ten and ones. First grade extends addition and subtraction to 20 with fluency to 10, adds place value with tens and ones to 120, two-digit addition, comparison symbols, time to the half hour and simple graphs. Kindergarten sheets have pictures on every item; first grade sheets rely more on numerals and equations.
