2D Shapes Worksheet for Preschoolers: Identifying Shapes and Properties
This worksheet pushes 4-6 year olds past simply naming shapes into analyzing their properties — counting sides and corners for circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, and hexagons, and using those properties to answer more complex questions about which shapes combine to form others. That combination-and-composition piece (asking what shapes make up a bigger shape, or identifying a shaded portion) is genuine early geometric reasoning, well beyond simple shape recognition.

How to use this worksheet
Work through the shapes one at a time, having your child count the sides and corners out loud before ticking or crossing each property listed. For questions about which shapes combine to make another shape, have your child point to the smaller shapes within the larger outline before answering. When asked about a shaded portion, ask your child to describe what fraction or part of the whole shape is colored in. Finish by reviewing any missed properties together, recounting sides or corners as needed.

- 1Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard, looking specifically for pentagons and hexagons, which are less common than circles and squares.

- 4Challenge your child to build a hexagon using six paper triangles.
- 5Describe a shape by its properties only — 'I have four equal sides and four corners' — and have your child guess which shape it is.
