UKG Maths Worksheets
UKG maths worksheets are practice sheets for children aged 5 to 6 in Senior KG, the year Indian children move from counting to calculating. They cover reading and writing numbers to 50, number names, before, after and between, addition and subtraction within 10, an introduction to tens and ones, 2D shapes and repeating patterns.
UKG maths introduces the plus and minus signs, and that changes how a child looks at a page. In LKG a sheet asked "how many?"; in UKG it asks "how many altogether?" and "how many are left?". The sheets here build that shift carefully: addition starts with pictures of two groups, then numerals with picture support, then bare sums within 10. Numbers extend to 50 with a hundred-chart layout so the child sees that 23 sits under 13, and tens-and-ones sheets use bundles of ten sticks, the same model CBSE and ICSE Class 1 textbooks use. Number names one to twenty, before/after/between and missing numbers appear on most UKG assessments, so they get dedicated pages. Fifteen minutes a day is enough.

What your child learns in UKG maths
By the end of UKG a child is expected to count, read and write numbers to 50, write number names to twenty, say the number before, after and between, complete missing-number sequences, add and subtract within 10 with and without pictures, understand a teen number as one ten and some ones, name 2D shapes and a few 3D solids, and extend repeating patterns.
- Number: counting and writing to 50, number names 1–20, before/after/between, missing numbers, greater and smaller
- Addition: joining two groups, sums within 10 with pictures, then with numerals only, plus sign and equals sign
- Subtraction: crossing out, taking away within 10, minus sign, simple picture story sums
- Place value: bundles of ten, tens and ones for numbers 10–20 and beyond
- Shapes and patterns: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval; cube, sphere, cone; AB, ABB and ABC patterns
How to use UKG maths worksheets
Keep a handful of counters on the table for every sum. When your child hesitates on 4 + 3, have them make both groups, push them together and count, then write the answer. Move to sums without objects only when the picture sums are quick and correct. One sheet a day is enough; correctness with understanding beats pages of sums.
For numbers to 50, use the hundred-chart style sheets and have the child fill in missing numbers by column as well as row, which makes the tens pattern visible. Alternate a number sheet, a sum sheet and a shapes or pattern sheet across the week, and use a timed grid drill on Fridays once facts within 5 are automatic.
Common difficulties in UKG maths
Subtraction lags behind addition for most five-year-olds; crossing-out sheets fix that faster than bare sums. Reversing digits in teen numbers (writing 31 for 13) is common and improves when the child says "one ten and three ones" while writing. Number names are usually the weakest area on UKG assessments because they are spelling, not maths; practise them alongside the numeral with matching and tracing sheets.

What should a UKG child know in maths before Class 1?
Before Class 1 a child should read and write numbers to 50, write number names to ten or twenty, say what comes before, after and between, add and subtract within 10 without counting objects for the easy facts, recognise that 15 is ten and five, name common shapes and continue a pattern. Class 1 in CBSE begins with numbers to 99 and assumes these skills.
How do I teach addition to a UKG child?
Begin with two small groups of objects and the words "altogether" and "in all". Count both groups, push them together and count again. Then use picture sums on paper, writing the plus and equals signs as you say them. Only after that move to numeral-only sums, starting with adding 1 and 2, then doubles such as 2 + 2 and 3 + 3, and finally all facts within 10.
What are tens and ones in UKG?
Tens and ones is the first look at place value. A teen number such as 14 is shown as one bundle of ten sticks and four loose sticks, so the child learns that the 1 in 14 means ten, not one. UKG sheets usually cover 10 to 20, sometimes to 50, using bundles or blocks. This model carries straight into Class 1, where numbers extend to 99.
How many maths worksheets should a UKG child do each day?
One or two sheets, about fifteen minutes, is appropriate for a five-year-old. A number sheet on one day and a sums sheet on the next keeps both skills moving. Short daily practice with counters builds fact recall better than a long session, and stopping while the child is still keen makes tomorrow easier.
