Hindi Worksheets for Kids | बच्चों के लिए हिंदी वर्कशीट
Hindi worksheets for kids are printable practice sheets that teach children aged 2 to 8 to recognise, say, trace and write the Devanagari letters: the vowels (swar, अ to औ), the consonants (vyanjan, क to ज्ञ) and the matras that join them. They run from Nursery and LKG letter work to Class 1 word reading.
Hindi is learned in a different order from English. Every Devanagari consonant already carries the sound "a" (क is ka, not k), so children first learn the vowels and consonants as whole sounds, then the matras: the small signs such as ा, ि and ी that change क into का, कि and की. Reading starts as soon as a few letters are known, because two- and three-letter words without matras (जल, घर, कमल) are fully regular. The worksheets on this page follow that path, from tracing अ with a picture of an अनार to reading short words, so a parent or teacher in Nursery, LKG, UKG or Class 1 can find the next step.

What your child learns in Hindi from age 2 to 8
The early sheets are about seeing and saying: matching a letter to a picture that starts with its sound (अ for अनार, आ for आम), colouring the letter and tracing it along dotted lines. The शिरोरेखा, the line along the top of each letter, is introduced from the start because it is part of how every Devanagari letter is formed.
Once the swar and the common vyanjan are familiar, children move to matras and the barakhadi (क, का, कि, की…), then to reading and writing two- and three-letter words, and finally to short sentences. Hindi is written as it is spoken, so a child who knows the letters and matras can read almost any new word.
- Ages 2–3: listening to Hindi rhymes, matching pictures, colouring large letters
- Ages 3–4: swar अ to औ, tracing with the शिरोरेखा, first sounds of familiar words
- Ages 4–5: vyanjan क to ज्ञ, letter–picture matching, two-letter words without matras
- Ages 5–6: matras ा ि ी ु ू, barakhadi, reading three-letter words
- Ages 6–8: all matras, conjunct letters, short sentences and simple comprehension
How to use Hindi worksheets at home
Say the sound aloud every time: the letter name and the sound are the same in Hindi, so naming the letter is already phonics. Trace each letter starting with the शिरोरेखा and then the body of the letter, and keep sessions to one sheet and about ten minutes for a young child.
In homes where Hindi is not the first language, pair each sheet with spoken Hindi: a rhyme, a story or naming objects around the house. A child who hears the words will read them far more easily than one who only meets them on paper.
Common difficulties and what helps
Mixing letters that look alike (ब and व, घ and ध, भ and म) is normal at first; tracing them side by side and saying the sound helps. Short and long vowels (इ and ई, उ and ऊ) are often confused in writing, so practise the matras ि and ी in pairs with words the child knows, such as दिन and दीदी.
Frequently asked questions
At what age should a child start learning Hindi letters?
Most children are ready to recognise and trace their first Hindi letters at around 3 to 4, in Nursery or LKG, after a year or two of hearing Hindi rhymes and stories. Writing letters independently usually comes in UKG, and reading words with matras in Class 1. Starting earlier with spoken Hindi matters more than starting earlier with worksheets.
Should my child learn swar or vyanjan first?
Most schools teach the swar (अ to औ) first, because the vowels become the matras that are later added to every consonant. Some programmes teach a few common consonants alongside the vowels so that children can read simple words such as जल and घर early. Either order works if the child says each sound aloud while tracing.
What is barakhadi in Hindi?
Barakhadi is the table of every consonant combined with every vowel sign, for example क, का, कि, की, कु, कू, के, कै, को, कौ, कं, कः. Children practise it once they know the swar and vyanjan, usually in UKG or Class 1, because it is the bridge from single letters to reading any written Hindi word.
Are these Hindi worksheets suitable for children who do not speak Hindi at home?
Yes. Each sheet pairs a letter with a picture and an everyday word, and the instructions are short, so a parent with little Hindi can follow along. Children learning Hindi as a second language should also hear it spoken: songs, picture books and naming things together make the letters on the page meaningful.
Do these Hindi worksheets follow NEP 2020?
NEP 2020 and the NCF for the Foundational Stage (2022) ask for early literacy in the home language and a second language from ages 3 to 8, built through sounds, letters, words and stories. These sheets cover that progression for Hindi: sound and letter recognition, letter formation, matras and early word reading.
Are the Hindi worksheets free to download?
Yes. Every worksheet can be downloaded free as a watermarked PDF after creating an account, with a limit of five downloads a day. An annual subscription (₹1000 or $20) removes the watermark and the daily limit on all worksheets and printable packs, including the Hindi activity books.
