Identify the Country: Flag Matching Worksheet

Filling in the missing letters of each country's name while studying its flag gives children ages 4-7 practice with letter-sound correspondence and spelling patterns, since they must sound out the word and recall which letters are already provided as clues. It also builds early geography knowledge, helping children connect a visual symbol (the flag) to a country's name for the first time. This dual practice of decoding and world knowledge lays groundwork for both literacy and social studies skills.

How to use this worksheet

Start by looking at the first flag together and naming the country out loud, even if your child doesn't know it yet. Point to the letters that are already printed and ask your child to say each one, then sound out what letter might be missing based on the blank spaces. Have them write the missing letters neatly to complete the country's name, checking their work against the flag's colors and pattern. Repeat with each flag on the page, encouraging your child to notice patterns they start to recognize, like double letters or common endings.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Eraser

Extension activities

  • •Print or draw a simple world map and stick a small sticker on each country your child correctly identified.
  • •Play a flag guessing game where you describe a flag's colors and shapes and your child names the country.
  • •Look up the capital city of one country from the worksheet and add it to a 'travel wish list' drawing.
  • •Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to rebuild each country's name from scratch, without the flag as a clue.
  • •Watch a short video or look at photos of one featured country's landmarks and talk about what makes it unique.

Tips for parents and teachers

Some children at this age will recognize a flag's colors before they can read its name, so let them lead with visual recognition before pushing the spelling piece. If a country name is unfamiliar or hard to pronounce, say it slowly together a few times rather than skipping it. Keep the tone playful and treat wrong guesses as part of the discovery process, since exposure to new country names matters more than perfect spelling right now.
