Sunlight Data Worksheet: Exploring Seasons and Sunlight Hours!
This worksheet introduces the science concept that daylight hours change with the seasons by having children record estimated sunlight hours for winter and summer dates and compare the two. For three- to five-year-olds, comparing two simple data points side by side is an early introduction to the idea of collecting and reading information, well before formal data or graphing skills are taught.

How to use this worksheet
Look at the worksheet together and help your child fill in the blanks with a winter date and a summer date, along with the estimated hours of sunlight for each — using a book, app, or your own knowledge as a reference. Talk through what the numbers mean, comparing which season has a bigger number. Have your child answer the questions asking which season has more sunlight and why they think that might be. Finish by discussing what this means for daily life, like when it gets dark outside.

- 2Research together the longest day of the year (summer solstice) and the shortest (winter solstice).
- 3Keep a simple daily log of when it gets dark outside over the course of a week.

- 5Use a flashlight and a globe or ball to act out how sunlight changes with the seasons.
