Trace and Write the Letter J Worksheet for Preschoolers
Tracing the uppercase letter J has children ages 3-5 practice a downward line that curves into a small hook at the bottom, a stroke pattern distinct from the straight lines and simple curves used in most earlier letters. This hooked stroke also appears in cursive-style movements children will encounter later, making it useful early practice for more advanced handwriting. The worksheet reinforces the /j/ sound in words like 'jump,' 'jar,' and 'juice.'

How to use this worksheet
Show your child the dotted letter J and demonstrate starting at the top with a straight line down, then curving left into a small hook at the bottom without lifting the pencil. Have them trace several guided Js, focusing on the hook curving smoothly rather than sharply. After tracing, let them try writing J independently on the blank lines, then color any pictures on the page while naming them together.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Crayons
Extension activities
- 1Find objects that start with J, like a jar or juice box, and say 'J is for...' with each one.
- 2Practice jumping in place ten times while saying 'J is for jump' together.
- 3Trace the letter J with a finger in a tray of sand or shaving cream, focusing on the hook at the bottom.
- 4Make a simple obstacle course and use the letter J shape as the path to follow, walking the hook curve at the end.
