Weight Sorting Worksheet: Heavy vs. Light!
Sorting pictures into 'heavy' and 'light' categories introduces children to comparative reasoning about weight, a physical property they can't always judge from a picture alone, which pushes them to rely on real-world knowledge of the objects shown rather than visual size alone. For ages three to five, this distinction is an early step toward measurement concepts they'll formalize later with scales and standard units.

How to use this worksheet
Look at the pictures at the bottom of the page together and talk about each object, asking your child whether they think it would feel heavy or light if they picked it up. Have them cut out each picture carefully along the lines. Sort the pictures by deciding which box, 'Heavy' or 'Light,' each one belongs in, then glue it into place. Review the finished sorting together, asking your child to explain their reasoning for a couple of their choices.
Materials needed
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil
Extension activities
- 1Go on a weight hunt around the house, picking up different objects and comparing how heavy or light they feel.
- 2Use a balance scale, or a hanger with two cups taped on, to physically compare the weight of different items.
- 3Sort real household objects into heavy and light piles as a hands-on version of the worksheet.
- 4Guess-then-check: predict which of two objects is heavier, then hold both to see if the guess was right.
