Formal Language Worksheet: Cut and Paste Sentences
This worksheet introduces the idea that language changes depending on context, that we speak or write differently to a teacher than to a close friend, by asking children to sort sentences into formal and informal categories. How to use this worksheet
Read each sentence at the bottom of the page aloud together, discussing whether it sounds like something you'd say to a stranger or teacher versus a close friend or family member. Have your child cut out each sentence strip carefully. Sort the sentences by deciding together which box they belong in based on the formal language rules, then glue each one into its correct spot. Review the finished page, reading each formal sentence aloud in a 'polite voice' to reinforce the tone.
