Formal vs. Informal Language Worksheet: Practice with Sentences!
Rewriting sentences between formal and informal versions teaches children ages 4-6 that the same message can be expressed differently depending on the audience, an early step toward social and register awareness in language. Because the task also involves matching a picture to each sentence, children practice connecting tone of language to context and setting, not just memorizing rules.

How to use this worksheet
Read the first sentence together and ask your child whether it sounds casual, like talking to a friend, or polite, like talking to a teacher or stranger. Have them decide whether to write the opposite version — turning a formal sentence informal, or an informal one formal — on the line provided, sounding it out as they write. Next, have your child cut out the picture that matches the situation described in the sentence. Guide them to glue that picture into the matching box, then repeat the read-rewrite-cut-glue routine for each remaining sentence.

- 1Act out a short skit where your child greets a stuffed animal casually and then greets an adult politely.
