Before and After Shapes Worksheet: Coloring and Identifying Shapes
This worksheet combines shape identification with sequencing for children ages 3-5, asking them to color shapes accurately and then determine which shape comes before or after a given one in a sequence. Applying 'before' and 'after' to shapes rather than pictures of events pushes children to think about order in a more abstract way. Coloring within defined shape outlines also builds hand control and attention to boundaries.

How to use this worksheet
Look at the shapes on the page together and name each one — circle, square, triangle, and so on — before coloring begins. Follow the color instructions for each shape, having your child color it in with the matching or specified color. For the before-and-after section, point to the reference shape and ask your child to tick the shape that comes before it and the shape that comes after it in the row. Review the whole page together, naming each shape and its position in the sequence.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Crayons
Extension activities
- •Create a shape matching game.
- •Draw your own 'before and after' shape scenarios.
- •Line up cut-out paper shapes in a row and ask what comes before or after a chosen shape.
- •Play a shape-naming race, calling out a shape and timing how fast your child finds it on the page.
- •Build a simple shape pattern with blocks and ask what shape belongs before or after a gap.
Tips for parents and teachers
Encourage children to verbalize the instructions and the shapes they are coloring, since naming each shape while coloring reinforces both vocabulary and recognition. If the before/after concept feels confusing when applied to shapes rather than events, return to a simpler line-up of three objects as a refresher. Keep colored pencils or crayons within easy reach so coloring doesn't interrupt the sequencing thinking.

Clothing Pattern Match Worksheet for Preschoolers
This worksheet has children ages 3-5 study repeating patterns on clothing items — stripes, polka dots, or checks — and match each item to its identical twin, building visual discrimination and early pattern-sequencing skills. Distinguishing between similar-looking patterns also sharpens attention to detail, a skill that later supports letter and word recognition.
Elephant Shapes: Fun Sorting Worksheet for Preschoolers!
This playful sorting worksheet has children ages 3-5 use an elephant's 'trunk' (their own hand reaching through a cut circle) to pick and sort shapes, building both shape recognition and simple classification skills. Physically selecting and grouping shapes by type, rather than just naming them on sight, helps solidify the concept that shapes can share a category even when their size or color differs.
Coding Kites Worksheet: Match the Bows!
This activity sharpens visual observation in children ages 3-5 as they compare color sequences on each kite to a set of loose bows and find the exact match. Careful, systematic comparison — checking each color in order rather than glancing quickly — builds an attention-to-detail habit that transfers directly to early reading and number work.
Coding Shapes Worksheet: Cut and Arrange Shapes!
This cut-and-paste worksheet has children ages 3-5 recreate example shape sequences by cutting out individual pieces and arranging them to match, combining shape recognition with the ordered, step-by-step thinking used in early coding and pattern logic. The physical act of cutting and precisely placing each piece also strengthens fine motor control and spatial planning.
Balloon Pattern Matching Worksheet for Preschoolers
Children ages 3-5 build early pattern-recognition skills on this worksheet by studying a sequence of colored balloons and finding the matching set to complete it. Recognizing and continuing a repeating sequence is a foundational pre-math skill that later supports understanding of number patterns, skip counting, and simple algebraic thinking.
Clothing Pattern Matching Worksheet for Preschoolers
By comparing clothing items and connecting each one to its pattern match, children ages 3-5 build visual discrimination skills, learning to notice fine differences in stripes, dots, or repeated shapes. This close-looking practice supports the same attention-to-detail children will later need to tell similar-looking letters and numbers apart.
3D Shapes Worksheet: Explore and Learn with Playdough!
This worksheet teaches children ages 4-6 the basic components of 3D shapes — vertices, edges, and faces — by having them count each feature on shapes like cubes and cones, then build matching shapes out of playdough. Physically constructing a shape and counting its parts by hand builds a far deeper understanding of geometry than looking at flat pictures alone, since children can touch and rotate what they've made.
Balloon Pattern Matching Worksheet for Preschoolers
This worksheet strengthens pattern recognition in children ages 3-5 by having them study a repeating sequence of colored balloons and locate the matching arrangement elsewhere on the page. Recognizing and reproducing a pattern is an early pre-algebra skill, laying groundwork for later number patterns and logical sequencing.
