Cute Hedgehog Cut and Paste Worksheet for Valentine's Day
Assembling a hedgehog from cut paper pieces gives children ages 3-5 practice cutting varied shapes, since the round body contrasts with pointed spike or heart shapes, and builds an understanding of how many small pieces combine to make one larger picture. Placing spikes across the hedgehog's back also introduces an early sense of pattern and repetition as your child works across the body rather than gluing pieces in just one spot.

How to use this worksheet
Cut out the hedgehog's round body first, then move on to the smaller spike or heart pieces, cutting one at a time. Lay all the pieces near the body outline so your child can plan the layout before gluing anything down. Guide them to glue the spikes across the hedgehog's back in a row or cluster, working from one side to the other so pieces don't get skipped. Finish by adding a face and coloring any remaining details.
Materials needed
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Crayons or markers (optional)
Extension activities
- 1Make a fingerprint or thumbprint hedgehog by dipping a finger in brown paint and pressing 'spikes' around a drawn oval body.
- 2Go outside and collect small twigs or pinecones to compare their texture to a hedgehog's spikes.
- 3Look up simple facts about hedgehogs together, like what they eat and how they use their spikes for protection.
- 4Make a sensory bin using dry pasta or toothpicks stuck into a ball of playdough to mimic hedgehog spikes.
- 5Read a picture book featuring a hedgehog character and talk about its actions in the story.
