Like an Animal: Fun Movement Worksheet for Kids

This companion movement activity has children ages 3-5 match each animal to a specific way of moving and think briefly about why that animal moves that way, like a crab scuttling sideways or a frog leaping in hops, building early reasoning about how an animal's body shape relates to its movement. Physically imitating the movement afterward also develops proprioception, a child's sense of where their body is in space, which supports balance and coordination.

How to use this worksheet

Look at each animal with your child and ask what's special or different about how it moves compared to how people move. Talk briefly about why, like a crab's sideways-facing legs or a kangaroo's strong back legs for jumping. Have your child act out the movement themselves, giving them room to move safely. Repeat with each animal on the page, encouraging your child to notice what feels different about each type of movement in their own body.

Materials needed

  • Scissors
  • Popsicle sticks (optional)
  • Glue (optional)

Extension activities

  • Watch a short video clip of a crab, frog, or kangaroo moving and compare it to your child's own attempt.
  • Set up a mini animal movement circuit in the yard, with a different animal walk at each station.
  • Play a guessing game where your child performs a movement and you guess the animal, then swap roles.
  • Talk about how different body parts, like long legs or strong back legs, help each animal move the way it does.
  • Practice slow, controlled versions of each movement to build balance, then fast versions to build coordination.
