Spooky Math Worksheet: Halloween Counting Fun!

This Halloween math worksheet has children ages 4-5 count grouped pictures and then solve simple addition and subtraction problems, moving from concrete counting toward the more abstract skill of combining or taking away quantities. Writing each answer inside a tombstone shape keeps the seasonal theme playful while practicing genuine early arithmetic.

Curriculum

Number Sense > Counting 1-20

How to use this worksheet

Look at the first group of pictures together and count them aloud, then look at the second group and count those too. Depending on whether the problem shows a plus or minus sign, help your child figure out whether they should combine the two groups or take one away from the other. Have them work out the answer, using their fingers or the pictures themselves to check, and then write the number inside the tombstone shape. Continue through each remaining problem on the page the same way.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • •Create your own Halloween-themed math problems using toy pumpkins or candies.
  • •Use real objects, like candies, to act out the addition and subtraction physically.
  • •Play a simple dice game adding or subtracting two rolled numbers.
  • •Sort a small pile of Halloween erasers or stickers to check a problem's answer.
  • •Make up a silly story problem, like 'three ghosts flew away, how many are left?'

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage children to use their fingers or other manipulatives to help them count and solve the problems, since concrete objects make abstract addition and subtraction much easier to grasp at this age. Make it fun and engaging by using different voices for the characters in any story problems you invent together. If subtraction feels confusing, act it out physically by removing objects from a group rather than only working on paper.

Trace the Numbers 1-9 Worksheet for Preschoolers

Tracing NumbersNumbers

Tracing the numerals 1 through 9 gives children ages 3-5 repeated, guided practice with the specific pencil strokes each number requires, building the fine motor control and muscle memory needed for independent number writing. Because tracing follows a fixed, correct path, it also reinforces accurate numeral recognition, helping children tell visually similar digits apart.

Caterpillar Counting Worksheet for Preschoolers

CountingNumbers

Counting the segments of each caterpillar teaches children ages 3-5 one-to-one correspondence — touching or marking each segment exactly once while saying a number — which is the core skill underlying accurate counting. Writing the final total in a box also connects the physical act of counting to its written numeral, reinforcing early number-writing practice.

Pac-Man Maze Worksheet: Count and Move!

MazeCounting

This dice-counting maze gives children ages 3-5 repeated practice matching a rolled number to the correct number of moves, reinforcing accurate counting under a bit of playful pressure. Tracking Pac-Man's current position after each roll also builds short-term spatial memory, since children must remember where they left off before moving again.

Pac-Man Maze Worksheet: Count and Move!

CountingMaze

This dice-driven maze combines counting practice with path-following for children ages 3-5, since they must accurately count dots on a die before moving Pac-Man the matching number of spaces forward. Deciding how far to move and staying on the correct path also builds early strategic thinking, as children track their current position within the maze after each turn.

AdditionCounting

Counting corn seeds on two ears of corn and combining them into one total teaches children ages 3-5 the core concept of addition as joining groups together, using a concrete, countable image rather than abstract numerals alone. This worksheet also builds one-to-one correspondence, since accurate addition depends on touching or pointing to each seed exactly once while counting.

NumbersNumber Recognition

This activity strengthens numeral recognition for children ages 3-5 by having them find and pair matching numbers from 0 to 18 printed on separate strips. Because the numbers are scattered rather than in order, children must recognize each digit shape on its own rather than relying on counting sequence, which builds true number recognition instead of rote list-reciting.

Addition House Worksheet for Preschoolers

AdditionCounting

This hands-on craft turns simple addition into a reusable game, as children ages 4-5 build a paper house with numbered windows and a door that can be changed with tape or number stripes. Physically swapping numbers to create new addition problems (like 2 windows + 1 door) helps children grasp that addition means combining separate groups into one total, rather than just memorizing facts.
