Apple Sorting Worksheet: Color and Size Fun!
This sorting worksheet has children ages 4-6 classify a set of cut-out apples by two different attributes, color and size, simultaneously, which builds more advanced categorization skills than sorting by a single trait alone. Deciding which basket an apple belongs in based on two criteria at once also strengthens early logical reasoning.
Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Cut out all the apples at the bottom of the page and spread them out so your child can see them clearly. Look at the baskets together and talk about what makes each one different, perhaps one basket is for red apples and another for green, or one for big and one for small. Have your child sort and glue each apple into the basket that matches its color and size correctly. Once finished, count how many apples ended up in each basket together.
Materials needed
- Scissors
- Glue
- Crayons or colored pencils
Extension activities
- •Have children draw their own apples and sort them by a new attribute, like spots or stripes.
- •Create a real-life sorting activity using different colored and sized household objects.
- •Compare the totals in each basket and say which has the most or fewest apples.
- •Taste-test real red and green apples and talk about differences beyond color.
- •Make an apple-themed graph showing how many of each color were sorted.
Tips for parents and teachers
Encourage your child to describe the apples as they sort them, asking questions like 'what color is this apple?' and 'is this apple big or small?' to make sure they're considering both attributes. If sorting by two criteria at once feels overwhelming, start by sorting for color only, then redo the activity sorting for size. Counting the final totals together adds a natural math extension to the sorting task.

Color Sorting Worksheet: Cut and Paste the Pictures!
This worksheet helps children ages 3-5 practice color recognition and sorting by cutting out pictures and gluing each one into the row matching its color. Physically sorting objects by a single shared attribute, like color, builds early categorization skills, while the cutting and gluing strengthens fine motor coordination needed for more complex craft and writing tasks later on.
Color the Circles: Vocabulary Worksheet for Preschoolers
Matching a chart of letter-color pairings to circles below reinforces alphabet recognition for children ages 3-5 while training them to hold a two-step visual instruction in mind — find the letter, then find its color — while coloring.
Color Sorting Worksheet: Cut and Paste the Objects!
This cut-and-paste worksheet has 3-5 year olds identify the color of each pictured object and sort it into the matching color square — a task that requires accurate color recognition rather than guessing, since some colors (teal versus blue, or orange versus red) can be genuinely tricky to distinguish at this age. Cutting the pictures out along their edges and matching each to a labeled color square also builds fine motor control alongside the sorting logic.
Color Sorting Fun: Cut and Paste Worksheet for Preschoolers
Sorting cut-out objects by color teaches children ages 3-5 to classify items based on a single shared visual attribute, an early categorization skill that lays groundwork for more advanced sorting and grouping tasks in math and science. The cutting and gluing also reinforces color recognition through repeated, hands-on decision-making rather than passive naming.
Color Sorting Fun: Cut and Paste Worksheet for Preschoolers
This cut-and-paste activity builds color recognition alongside fine motor control, as children use scissors to cut out pictures and glue them into matching color categories. For ages 3-5, sorting by a single attribute like color is an early classification skill that lays the groundwork for later math concepts like grouping and comparing.
Clothing Pattern Match Worksheet for Preschoolers
This worksheet has children ages 3-5 study repeating patterns on clothing items — stripes, polka dots, or checks — and match each item to its identical twin, building visual discrimination and early pattern-sequencing skills. Distinguishing between similar-looking patterns also sharpens attention to detail, a skill that later supports letter and word recognition.
Taste Bud Sorting Worksheet: Identify and Sort Foods by Taste!
This worksheet introduces children ages 4-6 to four basic taste categories — salty, sour, bitter, and sweet — by having them sort pictured foods into the correct group. Beyond taste vocabulary, sorting foods by an invisible property like flavor (rather than an obvious one like color or shape) pushes children to draw on memory and prior experience, building more advanced classification skills.
Elephant Shapes: Fun Sorting Worksheet for Preschoolers!
This playful sorting worksheet has children ages 3-5 use an elephant's 'trunk' (their own hand reaching through a cut circle) to pick and sort shapes, building both shape recognition and simple classification skills. Physically selecting and grouping shapes by type, rather than just naming them on sight, helps solidify the concept that shapes can share a category even when their size or color differs.
