Trace and Count the Number 17 Worksheet for Preschoolers

This worksheet challenges children ages 3-5 to trace the two-digit number 17 and then count out a matching set of seventeen rectangles, linking the written numeral to an actual quantity they can see and touch. Counting all the way to 17 pushes children past the more familiar 1-10 range and builds stamina for extended counting sequences. It also reinforces one-to-one correspondence, the skill of matching each number word to exactly one object as they count.

Curriculum

Number Recognition > Number Writing

How to use this worksheet

Begin with the tracing boxes at the top of the page, having your child follow the dotted lines to form the number 17 several times. Then move to the rectangles below and ask your child to count each one aloud, touching it as they say the number, until they reach seventeen. Once they've counted all seventeen, have them color the rectangles in with a crayon, recounting if they lose track partway through.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • •Have your child find household objects and count out a group of exactly 17 of them, like coins or cereal pieces.
  • •Write the number 17 several times on scrap paper, saying 'seventeen' each time it's written.
  • •Build a tower of 17 blocks together, counting each one as it's added.
  • •Play a simple game where you say a number between 10 and 20 and your child claps that many times.

Tips for parents and teachers

Counting into the teens is genuinely harder than counting to 10, so expect some skipped numbers or losing their place partway through seventeen items, especially the first few times. If your child struggles, break the rectangles into smaller groups of five and count the groups together before combining totals. Keep praise focused on the counting process, not just landing on the right final number.

Tracing NumbersNumbers

Tracing the numerals 1 through 9 gives children ages 3-5 repeated, guided practice with the specific pencil strokes each number requires, building the fine motor control and muscle memory needed for independent number writing. Because tracing follows a fixed, correct path, it also reinforces accurate numeral recognition, helping children tell visually similar digits apart.

CountingNumbers

Counting the segments of each caterpillar teaches children ages 3-5 one-to-one correspondence — touching or marking each segment exactly once while saying a number — which is the core skill underlying accurate counting. Writing the final total in a box also connects the physical act of counting to its written numeral, reinforcing early number-writing practice.

AdditionCounting

Counting corn seeds on two ears of corn and combining them into one total teaches children ages 3-5 the core concept of addition as joining groups together, using a concrete, countable image rather than abstract numerals alone. NumbersNumber Recognition

This activity strengthens numeral recognition for children ages 3-5 by having them find and pair matching numbers from 0 to 18 printed on separate strips. This hands-on craft turns simple addition into a reusable game, as children ages 4-5 build a paper house with numbered windows and a door that can be changed with tape or number stripes.
