Trace and Write the Letter D Worksheet for Preschoolers

Focusing only on the uppercase D lets children build solid, repeated practice with its single straight line and large curve before adding the more visually similar lowercase d, which can otherwise get confused with b at this age. Tracing and then writing D independently at ages 3-5 moves a child from copying to recalling the letter shape from memory, an important step toward true handwriting.

How to use this worksheet

Trace the dotted lines to practice writing the letter D, following the straight line down and the curve around. Once your child feels comfortable with the guided tracing, have them try writing the letter D on their own on the blank lines. Talk about D words together as they work, like dog or duck. Let them color any pictures on the page once the writing practice is done.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • •Find objects that start with the letter D around the house, like a door, a doll, or a drum.
  • •Color the pictures on the worksheet and say each D word out loud.
  • •Practice writing D in a tray of sand or with a fingertip in shaving cream.
  • •Make a simple drum out of a container and practice the D sound while tapping a beat.
  • •Draw a dog or duck and label it with a big letter D.

Tips for parents and teachers

Because this page focuses only on the capital form, it's a good opportunity to build strong, independent recall of D's shape before your child needs to juggle both cases. Watch for confusion with the mirror-image letter B, which is common and improves with patient, repeated practice rather than quick correction. Praise the moment your child writes D correctly without looking at the traced example, since that's a real sign of progress.

Parts of a Plant Worksheet: Identify and Label!

SciencePlants

This activity teaches children ages 3-5 the basic parts of a plant — flower, stem, leaf, and roots — by having them label a diagram and add texture using real pulses or grains glued onto the plant shape. Combining a tactile material with each labeled part helps young children retain the vocabulary better than labeling alone, since touch and sight reinforce the same information.
