Water Sources Flashcards: Learn About Natural Water Bodies!
Sorting natural water into distinct types — a river that flows, a lake that's still and enclosed, an ocean that's salty and vast — introduces a 4-6 year old to early classification skills in earth science, well before they'd encounter these terms formally in school. Writing a short description on the back of each card also gives early writers a low-pressure reason to put a few words on paper about something they've just learned.
Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Cut out each flashcard and talk through what's shown before coloring it, asking your child what they already know about that water source. Color the front of each card together, then help them write one or two describing words on the back — 'salty', 'flows', 'still' — based on your conversation. Once the set is finished, shuffle the cards and quiz each other by describing a water source and having the other person guess which card it is.

- •Look up photos of a river, lake, and ocean online and compare how each one actually looks.
- •Fill a bowl with water and add salt to taste-test (safely) the idea of 'salty' versus 'fresh' water.
- •Draw a simple map showing a river flowing from mountains into the sea.
- •Read a picture book about the water cycle and connect it back to the flashcard water sources.
- •Visit a local river, lake, or coastline if possible and match it to its flashcard afterward.
Tips for parents and teachers
Keep the on-card descriptions simple and concrete — 'big and salty' is more useful to a 4-year-old than 'a large body of saline water'. This is also a natural moment to introduce basic water conservation ideas, since young children are often genuinely curious about where water comes from and where it goes.
