Articles Adventure: A, An, and The Worksheet for Preschoolers
Choosing between 'a,' 'an,' and 'the' teaches children ages 4-6 one of English grammar's trickier rules — that 'an' is used before words starting with a vowel sound while 'a' comes before consonant sounds — building an ear for language patterns that native speakers often absorb through repetition rather than explicit rules. How to use this worksheet
Read the first sentence aloud together, pausing at the blank space where an article is missing. Have your child say the word that follows the blank out loud and listen for whether it starts with a vowel or consonant sound. Guide them to choose and write the correct article — 'a,' 'an,' or 'the' — based on that sound, then reread the full sentence to check it flows naturally. Continue this listen-choose-write process for each remaining sentence on the page.

- 1Play an oral game, saying a noun aloud and having your child quickly decide whether it needs 'a' or 'an' before it.
