Food Groups Sorting Worksheet for Preschoolers

This worksheet helps children ages 3-5 learn about the different food groups and practice categorizing food items by cutting out pictures and pasting them into the correct group. Sorting foods this way builds early classification skills while also introducing the idea that different foods serve different purposes for the body, laying groundwork for healthy eating habits.

Curriculum

Health & Hygiene > Healthy Eating

How to use this worksheet

Cut out the food pictures at the bottom of the page together, naming each food aloud as you go. Look at the food group carts or sections on the worksheet and talk about what kind of foods belong in each one. Have your child decide which group each food belongs to and paste it into the matching cart. Review the finished page together, asking your child to explain why they placed a few of the foods where they did.

Materials needed

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil

Extension activities

  • •Have your child draw their favorite food from each food group on a separate sheet.
  • •Create a healthy meal plan together, choosing one food from each group for a pretend dinner.
  • •Sort real groceries into food groups the next time you unpack shopping bags together.
  • •Play a guessing game, describing a food's group and having your child name a food that fits.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage your child to talk about why they placed each food item in a specific group, since explaining their reasoning reinforces the categories more than passive sorting does. This reinforces their understanding of healthy eating and gives you a natural opening to talk about balanced meals. If a food seems to fit more than one group, use it as a chance to discuss that some foods, like cheese, can belong to more than one category.

Shapes2d Shapes

This playful sorting worksheet has children ages 3-5 use an elephant's 'trunk' (their own hand reaching through a cut circle) to pick and sort shapes, building both shape recognition and simple classification skills. This simple experiment introduces children ages 3-5 to the basic science of surface tension and how soap breaks it, using pepper flakes sprinkled on water as a visual demonstration. States Of MatterScience

This worksheet introduces children ages 4-6 to the three states of matter — solid, liquid, and gas — by having them examine images and sort each one into its correct category.
