Phases of the Moon Worksheet: Trace, Color, and Learn!

This worksheet introduces children ages 3-5 to the changing shapes of the moon by having them trace each phase's outline, say its name aloud, and color it in, connecting a science concept to hands-on tracing practice. Drawing and labeling the phases in a circle afterward reinforces that the moon moves through this same cycle in a repeating, predictable order.

Curriculum

Earth & Environment > Moon Phases

How to use this worksheet

Trace the outline of each moon phase together, following the dotted lines and saying its name aloud, like 'full moon' or 'crescent moon.' Color each traced phase once it's complete. Move to the circle at the bottom of the page, and help your child draw and label each phase in its correct place around the circle to show the full cycle. Finish by reviewing the whole cycle together, pointing to each phase in order.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • •Create the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies, scraping away different amounts of cream filling.
  • •Read a book about the moon and its phases together.
  • •Look outside at the real moon over several nights and note which phase matches the worksheet.
  • •Make a simple moon phase calendar to track what you observe for two weeks.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage children to observe the moon at night and identify the phase they see, since connecting the worksheet to a real, visible object makes the concept far more memorable than paper alone. Discuss how the moon's appearance changes gradually over time rather than suddenly, since young children sometimes think a new moon means the moon disappeared entirely. Keep the phase names casual and repeated often rather than expecting your child to memorize all eight terms right away.

Moon Phases Worksheet for Kids: Learn About the Moon!

ScienceMoon Phases

This worksheet introduces children ages 4-6 to basic astronomy by having them shade the parts of the moon that aren't lit by the sun and draw how the moon actually appears from Earth during each phase. Understanding that the moon's shape doesn't change but the part we see does is an early, concrete way to introduce the science of light, shadow, and orbit.

Clothing Pattern Match Worksheet for Preschoolers

PatternsMatching

This worksheet has children ages 3-5 study repeating patterns on clothing items — stripes, polka dots, or checks — and match each item to its identical twin, building visual discrimination and early pattern-sequencing skills. Distinguishing between similar-looking patterns also sharpens attention to detail, a skill that later supports letter and word recognition.

Taste Bud Sorting Worksheet: Identify and Sort Foods by Taste!

Five SensesSorting

This worksheet introduces children ages 4-6 to four basic taste categories — salty, sour, bitter, and sweet — by having them sort pictured foods into the correct group. Beyond taste vocabulary, sorting foods by an invisible property like flavor (rather than an obvious one like color or shape) pushes children to draw on memory and prior experience, building more advanced classification skills.

Coding Kites Worksheet: Match the Bows!

MatchingPatterns

This activity sharpens visual observation in children ages 3-5 as they compare color sequences on each kite to a set of loose bows and find the exact match. Careful, systematic comparison — checking each color in order rather than glancing quickly — builds an attention-to-detail habit that transfers directly to early reading and number work.

MatchingCritical Thinking

Matching each key to the lock sharing the same letter helps children ages 3-5 practice letter recognition in a playful, puzzle-like context rather than rote drilling. Because each key must be checked against several similar-looking locks before finding the right match, this worksheet also builds visual scanning and careful comparison skills that support problem-solving.
