This worksheet builds sentence comprehension by having children listen to a full sentence and then find the picture that matches its meaning, rather than just recognizing individual words. For three- to five-year-olds, this task requires holding an entire sentence in mind and connecting it to a visual scene, an important early step toward reading comprehension beyond single-word recognition.

How to use this worksheet
Read the first sentence aloud clearly, perhaps more than once. Ask your child what they think the sentence is describing. Have them look through the picture options, find the one that matches the sentence, and cut it out. Help them stick the matching picture into the box next to that sentence, then move on to the next sentence and repeat the process.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue or Tape
Extension activities
- 1Have the child create their own simple sentences about what they like to do, and draw a matching picture.
- 2Encourage the child to draw their favorite activity and describe it in a full sentence.
- 3Read a short picture book together and pause to ask what a sentence on the page means before turning to see the illustration.
- 4Play an acting game where you say a sentence and your child acts it out instead of drawing it.
- 5Take turns making up simple sentences for each other to match to objects around the room.
