Shape Monster Cut & Paste Worksheet for Preschoolers

Counting the sides of each shape monster and pasting on the matching number of paper teeth turns shape recognition into a hands-on counting task, linking geometry (how many sides a triangle, square, or pentagon has) directly to number sense. This combination is exactly the kind of cross-skill practice that helps 3-5 year olds move from just naming shapes to understanding what actually defines them.

How to use this worksheet

Look at each shape monster on the page and count its sides together out loud before cutting anything. Cut out the paper teeth provided along the dotted lines. For each monster, count the number of sides on its shape body, then glue that same number of teeth onto its mouth. Repeat for every monster on the page, checking the side count again if the number of teeth doesn't match.

Materials needed

  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil

Extension activities

  • Count the sides of real objects around the house, like a book (rectangle) or a clock (circle, zero straight sides).
  • Draw your own shape monster with a chosen number of sides and decide how many teeth it needs.
  • Play a shape scavenger hunt, finding one triangle, one square, and one circle somewhere in the house.
  • Use toothpicks or straws to build shapes and count the sides as you place each one.
  • Make a shape-sorting game by cutting different shapes from paper and grouping them by number of sides.

Tracing the numerals 1 through 9 gives children ages 3-5 repeated, guided practice with the specific pencil strokes each number requires, building the fine motor control and muscle memory needed for independent number writing. Because tracing follows a fixed, correct path, it also reinforces accurate numeral recognition, helping children tell visually similar digits apart.

CountingNumbers

Counting the segments of each caterpillar teaches children ages 3-5 one-to-one correspondence — touching or marking each segment exactly once while saying a number — which is the core skill underlying accurate counting. Writing the final total in a box also connects the physical act of counting to its written numeral, reinforcing early number-writing practice.

This playful sorting worksheet has children ages 3-5 use an elephant's 'trunk' (their own hand reaching through a cut circle) to pick and sort shapes, building both shape recognition and simple classification skills. Physically selecting and grouping shapes by type, rather than just naming them on sight, helps solidify the concept that shapes can share a category even when their size or color differs.
