Rocking Ship Cut and Paste Worksheet for Preschoolers

Building this rocking ship from separate cut pieces glued onto a large circular base asks children to think about spatial arrangement — which piece goes where on a curved surface — which is a slightly different challenge than pasting onto a flat rectangular page. At ages 3-5, this kind of assembly builds both scissor control and the visual planning needed to construct a recognizable picture from parts.

How to use this worksheet

Cut out the ship-related shapes along their dotted lines. Glue the shapes onto the large blue circle to build the rocking ship, following the example image as a guide for where each piece belongs. Work from the largest pieces, like the boat body, to the smaller details, like a flag or portholes. Let your child color the finished ship with crayons or markers once everything is glued and dry.

Materials needed

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Crayons or Markers (optional)

Extension activities

  • Make a simple paper boat and test whether it floats in a sink or bathtub.
  • Talk about what makes a boat rock back and forth and try gently rocking a toy boat in water.
  • Draw an ocean scene with waves for the finished ship to sail on.
  • Build a boat out of recycled materials like a cardboard box or foam tray.
  • Act out a short pretend sea voyage using the finished ship craft as a prop.

Tracing NumbersNumbers

Tracing the numerals 1 through 9 gives children ages 3-5 repeated, guided practice with the specific pencil strokes each number requires, building the fine motor control and muscle memory needed for independent number writing. Because tracing follows a fixed, correct path, it also reinforces accurate numeral recognition, helping children tell visually similar digits apart.

CountingNumbers

Counting the segments of each caterpillar teaches children ages 3-5 one-to-one correspondence — touching or marking each segment exactly once while saying a number — which is the core skill underlying accurate counting. Writing the final total in a box also connects the physical act of counting to its written numeral, reinforcing early number-writing practice.

This playful pretend-shaving activity builds fine motor control and bilateral coordination in children ages 3-5, as they draw a beard with a marker and then 'shave' it away using foam and a brush in careful, controlled strokes. It also introduces a simple science idea — that shaving foam can be applied and removed in layers — while giving children a hands-on, sensory way to imitate an everyday grown-up routine.
