Summer Clothes Word Search Worksheet for Kids

Scanning a letter grid to find whole words — sunhat, swimsuit, sandals — builds visual tracking and left-to-right scanning skills that carry directly over into reading full sentences later. Because every word on this list relates to summer clothing, it also reinforces a themed vocabulary cluster, which research on early reading shows helps new words stick better than unrelated word lists.

How to use this worksheet

Read the word list together first and talk briefly about each item — what it is, when you'd wear it — so your child is searching for something meaningful, not just letters. Have them scan the grid row by row for the first word, circling it once found, before moving to the next word on the list. Remind them partway through that words can run horizontally or vertically, since young searchers often only check one direction.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • Lay out real summer clothing items and match each one to its word on the completed puzzle.
  • Write one of the found words in a sentence together, like 'I wear my sunhat at the beach.'
  • Play dress-up and call out the clothing item's name as your child puts each piece on.
  • Make a simple 4-word word search of your own using clothing words your child chooses.
  • Sort a pile of real or pictured clothes into 'summer' and 'winter' categories.
