Vowel o Worksheet: Long and Short Vowel Sounds
This matching worksheet builds on early phonemic awareness by asking children ages 4-6 to listen for the long 'o' sound (as in 'boat') versus the short 'o' sound (as in 'dog') and sort accordingly. Cutting and pasting the matching picture adds a fine-motor and visual-matching layer on top of the listening task, so children are practicing several pre-reading skills at once. How to use this worksheet
Read each word aloud together and ask your child to repeat it, listening closely to the 'o' sound in the middle. Help them decide whether the word has a long 'o' or short 'o' sound and check the matching box. Have your child cut out the small picture at the bottom of the page and glue it next to the word it matches. Finish by rereading all the words in order, grouped by long or short sound.

Tips for parents and teachers
Watch whether your child is truly listening to the vowel sound or just guessing based on the picture — ask them to say the word slowly before checking a box. Cutting small shapes is still developing at this age, so offer pre-cut pieces or hand-over-hand help if scissors are frustrating. Celebrate correct sound identification as much as neat gluing, since the phonics skill is the real goal here.
