Bean Counting Fun: A Sorting Worksheet for Preschoolers!

Children ages 3-5 practice number recognition and one-to-one correspondence by counting out the exact quantity of beans shown on each numeral and physically placing them onto the matching picture. Handling small, individual beans and placing them one at a time reinforces accurate counting far more effectively than counting printed dots, since a misplaced bean is immediately obvious and easy to correct.

How to use this worksheet

Look at the number printed on each bean-shaped outline and read it aloud together. Have your child count out that exact number of real beans from a small pile, placing one at a time onto the picture while counting aloud. Once the correct number of beans is placed, help your child stick them in place, then move to the next number and repeat, comparing quantities between different numbers as you go.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Beans

Extension activities

  • •Use real beans, buttons, or pasta pieces to practice counting and sorting into small groups by number.
  • •Draw your own beans on paper and write a number on each, inviting your child to count out matching real objects.
  • •Create a bean collage, gluing beans into a fun picture or pattern while counting how many are used.
  • •Sort a mixed pile of beans by size or color before counting each group.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage your child to count aloud and touch each bean as they place it, since this one-to-one counting habit prevents skipping or double-counting. If your child places too many or too few beans, have them recount from the start rather than simply adding or removing one, which builds a more reliable counting strategy. Make it a fun activity by letting your child choose the color or type of bean for each number.

Caterpillar Counting Worksheet for Preschoolers

CountingNumbers

Counting the segments of each caterpillar teaches children ages 3-5 one-to-one correspondence — touching or marking each segment exactly once while saying a number — which is the core skill underlying accurate counting. Writing the final total in a box also connects the physical act of counting to its written numeral, reinforcing early number-writing practice.
