Ending Sound Worksheet: Complete the Words!
This worksheet builds on ending sound practice for children ages 4-5 by having them complete words based on pictures and then use the very first letter of each picture to build an entirely new word, adding a layer of creative word-building on top of straightforward phonics practice. Completing words by ending sound requires the same phonemic segmentation skill as beginning sound work, just applied to the trickier final position in a word. The second half of the worksheet, where beginning letters are strung together to form a new word, adds a satisfying puzzle element that rewards careful, accurate sounding-out in the first section.

How to use this worksheet
Look at the first picture together and say its name slowly, listening for the sound at the very end of the word. Have your child write the missing ending sound to complete the word beneath the picture. Repeat this for each picture in the first section. Then move to the second part of the page, where your child writes just the first letter of each picture in sequence to build and reveal a brand-new word.

Tips for parents and teachers
Encourage your child to sound out the whole word first before isolating just the ending sound, since jumping straight to the final letter without hearing the full word tends to produce more guessing. Listen carefully together for the ending sounds, and provide positive reinforcement throughout, especially during the trickier secret-word reveal section. Make it a fun learning experience by celebrating the reveal moment enthusiastically.
