Identify and Complete the Names Worksheet for Preschoolers
Children ages 4-5 build on early spelling skills by identifying pictures and completing their names using provided letter hints, strengthening both vocabulary and phonics awareness. Using hints rather than a fully blank space offers just enough support to keep the task achievable while still requiring active problem-solving.
Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Look at the first picture together and ask your child what they think it shows before revealing any hints. Point out the hint letters provided and help your child use them to figure out the missing letters in the word. Have them write the missing letters to complete the name, sounding out the full word once finished. Continue through the remaining pictures, checking each completed word together at the end.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Eraser
Extension activities
- •Have the child draw their own pictures and attempt to write the names independently.
- •Create flashcards with the pictures and names for extra practice matching image to word.
- •Play a hint-guessing game where you give a letter hint and your child guesses the full word.
- •Write a short list of other objects around the house and try spelling their names together.
- •Read a simple picture book and pause to spell out familiar words together.
Tips for parents and teachers
Encourage the child to sound out the words and identify the letters rather than guessing randomly, since the hints are meant to guide phonics thinking, not shortcut it. Provide assistance as needed, especially with letters that look or sound similar. Keep sessions short, since sustained spelling practice can be tiring for children this age.
