Roll a Story Worksheet: Create Fun Stories with Dice!

This dice-based storytelling worksheet helps children ages 4-7 practice narrative construction by rolling dice to randomly select a character, setting, and prop, then weaving those elements into an original story. Because the combination is different every time, children must think flexibly and creatively rather than relying on a memorized story, which builds oral language, sequencing, and imaginative reasoning skills that underpin later creative writing.

Curriculum

Reading Comprehension - Literature > Reading Comprehension

How to use this worksheet

Roll the first die and find the matching character in the key, then roll again for the setting and a third time for the prop. Once all three elements are chosen, talk through the story together: who is the character, where are they, and what do they do with the prop? Encourage your child to include a beginning, middle, and end as they tell their story aloud. If they enjoy it, roll again for a completely new combination and create a second story.

Materials needed

  • Dice
  • Pencil
  • Paper

Extension activities

  • •Draw a picture to illustrate the story your child just created.
  • •Act out the story together using toys or simple props from around the house.
  • •Record your child telling the story on a phone or tablet to play back later.
  • •Write down the story together, with your child dictating while you write the words.

Tips for parents and teachers

There are no wrong combinations or endings here — the goal is fluency and confidence in storytelling, not a polished plot, so resist the urge to correct or redirect too much. If your child gets stuck, ask open questions like 'what happens next?' rather than suggesting the answer yourself. For children who aren't writing independently yet, acting as their scribe lets them focus fully on the story.
