Reading Comprehension Worksheet: Max and Tuffy's Adventures!

Reading the short story about Max and Tuffy and answering questions afterward helps children ages 4-6 practice true reading comprehension, recalling specific details like who did what and where, rather than just decoding words on the page. Writing out their answers also builds the connection between understanding a story and expressing that understanding in writing.

How to use this worksheet

Read the story about Max and Tuffy aloud together, or have your child read it independently if they're ready. Look at the first question below the story and encourage your child to think back to what happened before answering. Have them write their answer on the line provided, repeating this process for each remaining question.

Materials needed

  • Pencil

Extension activities

  • •Draw a picture of your favorite scene from Max and Tuffy's adventure.
  • •Write a short new adventure story starring your own pet or a favorite animal.
  • •Retell the story in your own words without looking back at the page.
  • •Act out the story using stuffed animals or toy figures.
  • •Ask your child what they think might happen next if the story continued.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage your child to look back at the story to find an answer rather than relying only on memory, which builds the habit of using the text as evidence. Help them sound out any unfamiliar words they encounter while reading. Discuss the answers together afterward to reinforce comprehension and encourage them to explain their thinking.
