Simple Sentences: Read and Draw Worksheet for Kids
This worksheet has children ages 3-5 read a simple sentence and then draw a picture that represents its meaning, building reading comprehension by requiring them to visualize and produce what the words describe rather than just recognize them. Translating text into a drawing is a strong early check that a child truly understands what they've read, not just decoded the individual words.

Month 3: Learning & Development | Ages 5-6Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Read the first sentence aloud together, pointing to each word as you say it. Ask your child what the sentence is describing before they start drawing, to make sure they've understood it. Have them draw a picture in the box that matches the sentence. Repeat for each sentence on the page, then look back through the finished drawings together and re-read each sentence alongside its picture.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Crayons or colored pencils
Extension activities
- •Have the child write their own simple sentences, then swap with a sibling or parent to draw each other's sentences.
- •Turn one of the sentences into a short act-it-out game before drawing.
- •Read a short picture book together and pause to ask your child to describe what's happening in their own words.
- •Create a simple sentence scrapbook, adding one new sentence and drawing each week.
- •Play 'guess my sentence,' where you draw a simple picture and your child writes or says a sentence describing it.
Tips for parents and teachers
Encourage the child to sound out the words if they are able, offering help only after they've made a genuine attempt on their own. Check comprehension by asking them to explain their drawing in their own words, rather than simply checking if the picture matches — sometimes children understand more than their drawing shows. Encourage the child to color the drawings once finished for an extra layer of engaged, creative practice.
