Landforms Worksheet: Circle the Correct Picture!

This worksheet introduces children ages 4-6 to basic landform vocabulary — words like mountain, valley, island, or river — by asking them to read or hear a landform's name and circle the picture that matches it. Connecting a geography term to its correct visual representation builds early science and social studies vocabulary well before children can read complex nonfiction text on their own. This kind of word-to-picture matching also reinforces observational skills, since children must notice the distinguishing visual features that make one landform different from another.

Curriculum

How to use this worksheet

Read the first landform word aloud together and talk briefly about what that landform looks like. Have your child look at the set of pictures and circle the one that matches the word. Repeat this process for each landform word on the page, discussing a defining feature of each one as you go, like how a mountain is tall and pointed or a valley sits low between hills. Review the completed page together, naming each landform one more time.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • •Draw your favorite landform and talk about what makes it recognizable, like color, shape, or size.
  • •Create a diorama of different landforms using clay, sand, or playdough to build a 3D understanding.
  • •Look at a map or globe together and point out real examples of mountains, rivers, or islands.
  • •Watch a short nature video or look at photos of real landforms to connect the worksheet vocabulary to real images.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage the child to say the landform names aloud as they circle the pictures, since repeating unfamiliar vocabulary out loud helps it stick better than silent circling. Discuss the features of each landform as you go, pointing out what specifically makes a mountain different from a hill, or a lake different from a river, since these distinctions can be subtle for young children. If your family lives near or has visited any of these landforms, connecting the worksheet to a real memory makes the vocabulary far more memorable.
