Sequence Worksheet: What Comes Next?
Children ages 3-5 build pattern recognition and predictive reasoning as they study a sequence of objects, figure out the underlying rule, and determine which object comes next. Recognizing and extending patterns is a foundational pre-math skill that later supports understanding of number patterns, skip counting, and algebraic thinking, making this simple activity more mathematically important than it might first appear.

How to use this worksheet
Look at the sequence of objects in one row together and say each object's name aloud in order, helping your child notice the repeating rule. Ask 'What do you think comes next?' and have your child circle their prediction among the choices given. Once they've circled an answer, have them cut out the matching object and paste it into the box at the end of the row to complete the pattern, then repeat for each remaining row.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
Extension activities
- 1Create your own simple two- or three-item repeating patterns using toys, snacks, or crayons.
- 2Use blocks or building toys to build a pattern sequence and ask your child to add the next piece.
- 3Clap out a rhythm pattern, like clap-clap-stomp, and have your child continue it.
- 4Go on a pattern hunt around the house, looking for repeating patterns on clothing, tiles, or wallpaper.
