Family Words Worksheet: Picture Matching and Word Recognition

Children ages 4-6 practice recognizing and reading words from the 'family' word group, like 'candle' becoming 'candle-family' patterns or similar word-family endings, by matching written words to their corresponding pictures. Word family practice builds phonics pattern recognition, helping children read new words faster by spotting familiar chunks within them.

Curriculum

Phonics - CVC Words > CVC Short E Families

How to use this worksheet

Look at the first picture together and read the word choices provided, sounding out each one slowly. Have your child tick the word that correctly matches the picture. For the second part of the page, have them cut out the pictures, read each written word, and glue the correct picture into the box beside its matching word.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue or Tape

Extension activities

  • •Create a matching game using flashcards with word family words and their pictures.
  • •Write a few simple sentences together using some of the words from this word family.
  • •Draw pictures to represent each word family word your child practiced.
  • •Search for other words that share the same word family pattern during reading time.

Tips for parents and teachers

Encourage your child to sound out each word slowly, letter by letter, rather than guessing from the picture alone, since decoding practice is the real skill being built. Offer help with cutting and gluing, but let your child do the reading and matching independently. Celebrate their effort and progress, since recognizing word family patterns takes many repeated exposures to become automatic.
