Letter L Worksheet: Trace, Color, and Learn!

Tracing the letter L builds the top-to-bottom, left-to-right pencil strokes that show up again in dozens of other letters, so this is one of the more transferable shapes a 3-5 year old can practice. Naming and coloring objects that start with L — a lion, a ladder, a leaf — ties the shape to its sound, which is exactly how early readers start linking print to speech.

Curriculum

Writing > Letter Tracing A-Z

How to use this worksheet

Start by tracing the large model letter L with a finger before picking up a pencil, so your child feels the two straight strokes before drawing them. Move to tracing the dotted L with a pencil, then have them name each picture on the page and color only the ones that start with the L sound. Finish with the blank practice lines, where they write L on their own without the dotted guide.

Materials needed

  • Pencil
  • Crayons

Extension activities

  • •Build a letter L out of two straws or popsicle sticks glued at a right angle.
  • •Go on an 'L hunt' through a picture book, calling out every L word on the page.
  • •Trace a giant L on the floor with painter's tape and have your child walk it heel-to-toe.
  • •Pack a lunch of only L foods (lettuce, lemon, lentils) and name each one together.
  • •Practice writing L in a tray of rice or sand before moving back to paper.

Tips for parents and teachers

Watch which direction they draw the horizontal stroke — many kids drag it right to left at this age, which is fine to leave alone for now but worth noticing. If the vertical line wobbles, it's usually a grip issue, not a letter-recognition one, so check how they're holding the pencil before correcting the shape.

Trace the Letter S Worksheet for Preschoolers

Letter TracingTracing

Tracing the curved strokes of the letter S helps children ages 3-5 build the specific hand movements needed for handwriting, since S requires a continuous curving motion that's different from the straight lines of letters like L or T. Repeated tracing also reinforces letter recognition, helping your child associate the shape of S with its name and sound. Because curves are harder to control than straight lines, this worksheet targets a slightly more advanced fine motor milestone than basic line tracing.
