Letter U Tracing Worksheet for Preschoolers
U is a single smooth curve that dips down and back up, similar in motion to a shallow smile shape, giving 3-5 year olds continued practice with curved strokes after tackling letters like C and O. Tracing both uppercase U and lowercase u also shows children that, unlike many letters, U looks almost the same in both cases, just at a different size.
Curriculum
How to use this worksheet
Point out the dotted U and u and trace the curve with a finger first, starting at the top, dipping down, and coming back up. Have your child trace the dotted letters on the page in one smooth motion rather than several short strokes. Start with the uppercase U, then move on to practicing the lowercase u. Finish by naming a couple of U words together, like umbrella or up.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Eraser
Extension activities
- •Find U objects around the house, like an umbrella, a cup, or something with a U shape.
- •Draw an umbrella and write a big letter U underneath it.
- •Practice writing U with a fingertip in sand or shaving cream, keeping the motion smooth.
- •Make a rainbow-shaped U with sidewalk chalk outside and trace over it a few times.
- •Color the pictures on the worksheet and name each U word out loud.
Tips for parents and teachers
Since U is a smooth curve with no straight edges, encourage one continuous motion rather than a series of short, choppy lines — a slow air-trace before each pencil attempt often helps. It's common for young children to make the curve too shallow, closer to a straight line with rounded corners — a little more exaggeration of the dip is fine and even helpful at this stage. This letter builds directly on curve skills practiced with earlier letters like C.

Trace the Letter S Worksheet for Preschoolers
Tracing the curved strokes of the letter S helps children ages 3-5 build the specific hand movements needed for handwriting, since S requires a continuous curving motion that's different from the straight lines of letters like L or T. Repeated tracing also reinforces letter recognition, helping your child associate the shape of S with its name and sound. Because curves are harder to control than straight lines, this worksheet targets a slightly more advanced fine motor milestone than basic line tracing.
